What Are Avocados?

Avocados are a fruit which is also known as the alligator pear.
This is due to the pebbly skin and the fact that it resembles the shape of a pear.
They grow in the warmer regions of the world on a tall evergreen tree.
The fruit is picked before it is ripe so that it can be shipped around the world before it spoils.
They are available year round in the fresh produce section in most grocery stores.
When purchasing avocados, try to buy them while they are still green, and allow them to ripen in your home.
This will prevent them from bruising due to over handling.
As the avocados ripen the green shell will turn a dark color, but the inside will remain a nice light yellow-greenish color.
The inside flesh also becomes soft as the avocado ripens.
There are several different varieties and they include Hass, Fuerto, Zutano, Gwen, Pinkerton, and Reed.
What do They Contain Avocados are known for the high amount of calories and fats which they contain.
