Frugal Decorating Ideas for a Teen Girl's Bedroom
- Painting the walls, or even one accent wall, a new color will dramatically change the look of the entire room while costing you very little. Choosing a bold, bright color for the walls means you can select a neutral color for bedding and other pricey items that can stay when she changes her decor again.
If there's a bold and funky bedding set she feels she must have, watch for it to go on clearance or shop discount stores for something similar. Make your own curtains or pillows using bed sheets or basic fabric in the same color as the bed set. If you can't sew, enlist the help of a friend or relative who can. - Give her current furniture a face-lift by painting it or covering it with fabric. If new furniture is needed, shop thrift stores and yard sales for good quality pieces you can paint to match your teen daughter's style. For a brand new bedroom set, watch sales ads particularly around three-day holiday weekends for smaller local furniture stores. Picking up the furniture and assembling it yourself can save quite a bit of money. Another option is to shop at large discount bargain stores that carry furniture, such as Wal-Mart.
- After securing furniture, bedding and paint, the rest of the bedroom budget can go towards accessories. This can include picture frames, throw pillows, mirrors, shelves and storage bins. Check your local dollar stores, discount shops, thrift stores and yard sales for funky accessories she'll love. Make a day of shopping so she can pick out her own accessories. If she's decorating her room relying on a particular color scheme, such as black and white, she can purchase any mirror or lamp she wants and turn it into a black or white piece with paint or fabric.
Use complementary and contrasting colors and patterns. For a black and white color scheme, any pattern would work as long as it stays within the black and white colors. Add a punch of color with accessories using only one accent color, such as red or turquoise. Infuse the color into a throw pillow or two, a lampshade, mirror frame and a couple of small shelves on the wall.
You and your teen can create many accessories yourselves, or your daughter and her friends can make a party of it. Beaded curtains, memory boards and large picture frames or posters can be made at home for a fraction of the cost of purchasing the same items.
