Health coaching is tailored especially to those people who have chronic illness such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and the likes, to make some kind of changes in their lifestyle. The health coach and the client work together in order to choose and understand the kind of lifestyle that’s appropriate for the client’s current health state. It is a means of overcoming chronic illness as well as its associated effects.

When no one else seems to help you in your state of chronic illness, the health coach can. The health coach will help you focus on your health goals in a personal one-on-one approach and support you in overcoming your fears as well as frustrations to keep you moving forward throughout the entire health coaching course.

Some people with chronic illness are so wrapped up in their current health state that they lose focus on what should be done to alleviate and/or promote their overall health condition. They feel that their case is a hopeless one and they just let it sulk on them. In health coaching, the health coach diverts the client’s attention and lets him focus on a more health oriented goals and healthy lifestyle changes in a SMART approach – Specific, Manageable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound.

Health coaching is not about changing you in an instant. It’s about guiding and helping you make specific goals which will bring about the specific health and lifestyle changes that you desire. But of course, the desire for a healthier lifestyle change should come from you. It’ll be useless to embark on a journey of positive health improvement if you are not committed enough. Setting health oriented goals that are realistic and at the same time easy to manage is a good head start. Remember that a health coach is not there to act as a therapist who will focus on your past health state, but rather acts as a health advocate who will point you towards you future goals.

Note that there is no such thing as quick fix or easy way out when your health is jeopardized, and a chronic illness like hypertension is not easily fixed but is however, manageable. Undergoing health coaching doesn’t mean you are to let go of your maintenance meds, but it’s rather incorporating certain lifestyle changes such as balanced diet comprised mainly of fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fats, quitting on cigarette smoking, compliance to medications and routine check-ups as well as religious BP monitoring. These lifestyle modifications are just simple yet are often neglected.
