With the staggering number of people using marijuana, especially with the number of states in the United States that are legalizing it for personal consumption, emphasis is being placed on the possible effects it can have on its users. The Feinburg School of Medicine at Northwestern University has performed a study conducted by leader Matthew Smith that analyzed the physical brain changes in an experimental group of twenty year olds who were regularly consuming marijuana.
The data says that all participants had begun their use of this substance by the ages of 16 and 17 and been using it daily for the subsequent three years. They also had to have abstained from using for the prior two years. In addition, they had to have had no experiences with other forms of street drugs.
Those who had begun using marijuana at the early age of 16 to 17 years old and continued with daily abuse showed a deterioration in the brain structure known as the thalamus. The thalamus plays a role in communication, memory, and the ability to learn new material. This deterioration affects the "working memory," which is a term to describe the short-term memory and it's ability to hold information long enough for it to be allocated into long-term memory.
It is important to point out that although marijuana use had ceased for two years, these brain changes were still present and continued to cause the patients to perform under-par on memory tasks during the experiment.
As always, every individual should be engaging in at least thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise daily. This is meant as a moderate level of activity, not full-force sprinting, but a brisk walk or jog. This is the minimal suggestion and with time you should be increasing the duration or intensity of cardiovascular work-outs.
Good ways to obtain the maximum benefit from this type of exercise include high intensity interval training and yoga. High intensity interval training, or HIIT, involves cycling through sprinting, for instance, and walking. You switch between the two to allow the muscles to re-oxygenate and the heart rate and pulse to lessen a bit before hitting it hard again. Yoga, on the other hand, combines very calming and purposeful movements in order to strengthen and stretch the muscles while increasing the heart rate and maximizing your lung capacity. These are great places to start if you need some suggestions.
Another important side effect to increasing the regularity of exercise for schizophrenics is the increase in motivation. Feeling better about oneself has a ripple effect across your entire life. It can motivate you to correct and maintain a healthy diet. It can inspire you to work out even more regularly and intensely. And it can make you want to take care of yourself and your home in terms of hygiene. What more can you ask!
The most important benefit of exercising if you are dealing with schizophrenia is its effect on your life expectancy. Sadly, schizophrenics on average have a life expectancy that is 25 years less than compared to similar individuals who donâEUR(TM)t have schizophrenia. This has nothing to do with schizophrenia itself. It has to do with the other illnesses and complications that arise from leading a sedentary style of life. This increases the risk of all kinds of diseases and illnesses associated with being overweight.
