Colorectal Cancer Risk in Patients With Chronic Constipation

Colorectal Cancer Risk in Patients With Chronic Constipation

Conclusions

This study found that patients with more severe CC are associated with a significantly greater risk of developing CRCancer and benign colorectal neoplasms over time compared to CC-free patients. The risk of developing CRCancer and benign neoplasms over time increases with the level of CC severity. Thus, although CC is considered as a relatively benign disease, practitioners should be aware of this potential association in order to monitor and treat accordingly. Further research is warranted to evaluate whether patients who have their constipation well controlled are at lower risk of developing CRCancer and benign neoplasm. Longitudinal prospective studies analysing the causal relationship between CC and CRCancer would advance our understanding of prevention and management of these disorders.
