Middle School Spanish Club Activities
- Middle school Spanish clubs can provide students with an opportunity to explore areas of the Spanish speaking culture beyond the in-class language instruction period. Spanish clubs can attract new language learners to the language program as they see other students having fun and learning Spanish. Music, food, art, dance and games can make an after-school fiesta both educational and motivational for young language learners. Spanish clubs can also raise money for field trips and other educational opportunities not provided for in the school budget.
- Spanish clubs can organize and conduct dances using music in Spanish. Students can dance to Cumbias from artists like Celia Cruz, Selena or Kumbia Kings. They might enjoy learning how to dance Bachata with groups like Aventura or Monchy and Alexandra. Merengues from Proyecto Uno or Elvis Crespo might be very popular. Reggaeton tunes by Wisin and Yandel or Daddy Yankee will no doubt fill the dance floor.
- Have an international food fair featuring a wide variety of foods from around the Spanish speaking world.
Serve empanizadas Argentinian style. Spanish paella with rice, vegetables and seafood will not last long.
Tacos, burritos and enchiladas must be on the menu without neglecting tortas and tostadas. Instead of sodas offer horchata, jamaica and tamarindo drinks. Flan is a great dessert idea. Students can volunteer to bring the items pot luck style and involve the parents in the preparation. - Organize a parade for a celebration such as Cinco de Mayo or Mexican Independence day, September 16.
Have students dress up as historical figures or in traditional dress. Make posters with relevant expressions from the historical setting of the event. Create banners with messages in Spanish related to the event.
Organize a route for the parade and announce it in the bulletin to ensure a good turn out.
