Masjid Agung Mosque, Banten Lama

After exiting the market, you’ll find Masjid Agung Mosque standing before you, a beautiful example of design synthesis Javanese style. While the stepped roof is typical of Javanese mosques, other design elements betray Western and Chinese influences.

The mosque was founded by by Sunan Gunung Jati, one of the Wali Songo, or imams who brought Islam to Indonesia. His descendants gained political power, conquering this once-Hindu area (part of the Sunda empire) and converting its residents to Islam.
