Styles for a Bedroom

    Hollywood Regency

    • Hollywood Regency adds silver screen glamour to the boudoir. Choose a neutral wall color, such as white, gray or cream. Ramp up the Hollywood drama by using large-scale mirrors or apply a sheer metallic glaze to the focal wall. Stick to rich, jewel-tone accent colors. Make a tufted, upholstered headboard covered in faux leather or moire. Touches of black accessories and fabrics will enhance the look. Faux fur, velvet and satin bring to mind films from the golden age of Hollywood. A flokati rug provides texture and softness underfoot. Top it off with a sparkling deco chandelier over the bed.

    French Country

    • Begin the French country transformation by selecting colors like butter yellows, blues with a hint of lavender, creams and soft greens reminiscent of rural villages. Give existing furniture a lime wash and bring in gently distressed, natural wood finishes. Keep bedding casual, yet coordinated, with the room's overall color scheme. Mix and match toiles with homespun florals, checks, plaids and ticking stripes; just remember to stay within the same color family. Place a French quilt across the foot of the bed for chilly evenings. Cushy down comforters, bed pillows and cushions suit the French country vibe perfectly.

    Rustic Cottage

    • Rustic cottage embodies a romantic, aged appearance in furnishings and fabrics. Distressed furniture with worn paint finishes, wicker and iron with bits of rust are hallmarks of rustic cottage style. Wire and wicker baskets provide storage while adding charm. Aged urns and planters filled with ivy and flowers bring the outdoors inside. A sisal or jute rug on a wooden floor absorbs sound and warms the room. Secondhand furnishings and accessories bring rustic cottage style to life. Use a variety of vintage or vintage-inspired fabrics for bedding, pillows and curtains. Faded cabbage roses, cabana stripes and checks provide a homey, lived-in feel to this decidedly feminine bedroom style.

    Bohemian

    • A Bohemian bedroom suggests an eclectic, individual sense of style. It allows for total freedom using saturated colors, mismatched furniture, lots of accessories and haphazard placement. While the bohemian bedroom may be planned right down to the last tchotchke, it appears completely free-form. Import stores yield the best treasures for a Bohemian bedroom. Shop the globe for furniture, textiles, trinkets and artwork to adorn the floors, walls and ceilings. Ethnic retailers also have good selections of fabrics, such as brocades, silks and paisleys. Use them on the bed, for cushion covers and simply draped on a rod for impromptu curtains. Weathered metal lighting pendants, candles and sconces cast soft light onto wildly rich fabrics and eclectic furnishings that embody Bohemian style.
