What Is the Difference Between Driving Lights & Fog Lights?

    Driving Lights

    • Driving lights produce a bright beam of light. The light is used to illuminate the lower region of the road, resulting in better visibility. The additional vision allows more time to react to obstacles on the road, such as wildlife and debris.

    Fog Lights

    • Fog lights create a low, wide beam of light. Fog lights are designed to create light under a layer of fog, resulting in less glare from the fog. The lights work in conjunction with driving lights to improve vision during various weather conditions, such as rain, snow and fog.

    Misconceptions

    • It is often thought that yellow fog lights give greater visibility compared to white or blue lights. However, all colors are equally effective.

    Warning

    • Driving lights and fog lights should be used only during situations that call for them, such as poor weather conditions or on unlit roads. If driving or fog lights are improperly used, they can reduce visibility for oncoming traffic.
