Those with a passion for interior decorating can turn their interest into a career by enrolling in a junior college. Several schools offer you a formal education in interior design. - You can get an associate's degree or a certificate of achievement in interior design from Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. Required courses include color theory and application, drafting for interiors, interior finishes and construction materials, and an introduction to design-related sales and marketing concepts. Electives include focuses on kitchens, baths, fabrics, codes and regulations, and residential space planning. "The application of the principles and elements of design are incorporated into every course and the content addresses the critical issues affecting the built environment: technology, universal design, and sustainability," the school's website notes.

The school notes that the goal of its program is to prepare students to pass the examination that allows them to become licensed interior designers in the state of Illinois. Joliet Junior College offer an associate's degree in interior design that includes core classes such as furniture history, textiles, interior lighting, bath basics and computer-aided drafting for interior design. Students who complete the associate's program can take a third-year "advanced designer" course that results in a certificate of achievement.
