North American Train Tours
- The main rail carriers in the United States and Canada are Amtrak and Canrail, respectively. Both offer transcontinental tours and shorter legs to hundreds of destinations. Many local short-line train companies in regions of both countries offer tours of a few hours or a couple of days. Dozens of tour operators craft tours arranged around train travel.
- On Amtrak, the California Zephyr links Chicago to the West. The Coast Starlight travels between Los Angeles and Seattle.The Southwest Chief links Los Angeles and Chicago. Canrail offers travelers the Great Cities and Rail Tour, Quebec Winter Rail Wonderland, and the Rockies West Coast Explorer. Train tours can be enjoyed by solo travelers or families.
- Tours operators offer packages on Amtrak, Canrail and other carriers with diverse themes and destinations. A sampling of prices includes a 10-day Canyonlands by Rail tour on Canrail starting at $2,100 U.S. per person including meals and all lodging on the train. An eight-day tour to see fall foliage in New England arranged through Amtrak is priced at around $2,000 per person including all transportation from departure point and all lodging at tour stops.
