How to Get a Lien Owed Added to the Debtor's Credit Reports

    • 1). Record the lien. If you have obtained a lien on real property, record a notice of lien in the office of the county recorder where the real property is located.

    • 2). File the lien. If you have obtained a lien on personal property, file a notice of lien with your secretary of state.

    • 3). Include in the notice of lien the name of the creditor, the name and address of the debtor, the location of the property and the statement that a lien is being placed on that property.

    • 4). Wait for the credit reporting agency. After you have filed or recorded the lien, the lien becomes public record. Credit reporting agencies routinely monitor public records, and they will find that the debtor has a lien filed against him and include the lien on the debtor's credit report. With the invention of online databases, credit reporting agencies can easily find liens online, because liens are public record in all states.
