Crystal Chandeliers On The Big Screen

Crystal chandeliers are a great edition to any home, but them seem to be an even bigger deal on film. With a little research, it was amazing to find out just how many famous crystal chandelier scenes occurred on film. However, many of those scenes include the destruction of said chandelier. Many times the chandelier falls in high class surroundings to create chaos. In more comedic films, the hero will accidentally drop the chandelier onto his allies. This is actually the case in the movie Robin Hood: Men in Tights. But because it's a Mel Brooks parody, Robin Hood cuts the wrong rope and the chandelier falls on himself instead.

Quite possibly the most famous falling crystal chandelier scene occurs in Phantom of the Opera. It happens first in the novel by Gaston Leroux, which is supposedly based on an actual incident. The infamous scene made its way to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway show and of course the movie version in 2004. The famous scene is very different though in the movie. In the play, the crashing of the immense crystal chandelier occurs right before the end of Act I. After ruining Carlotta's singing voice, the Phantom exclaims that she's singing to bring down the chandelier, which in turn crashes. In order to make the movie much more dramatic, the Phantom drops it towards the very end when they try to capture him. It is used instead as a distraction so he can escape with Christine.

The movie Clue opted for the comedic usage like Robin Hood. Colonel Mustard and the maid are trapped in one of the rooms while two other characters are trapped in the room opposite. One group screams, "Let us out," as the others want to be let in. In a poor attempt to shoot the lock off the door, the maid accidentally shoots the rope holding up the chandelier. Right before it falls, Colonel mustard exclaims that he can't take any more surprises. Naturally it falls right on him.

But not all movies want to drop those expensive and beautiful crystal chandeliers. Some movies just want to feature it, such as Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The scene of the two dancing with the exquisite chandelier in the background is an unforgettable scene. Not only is it truly romantic that the two have finally fallen in love, it's one of the first uses of CGI in a Disney film.

The crystal chandelier is truly a beautiful piece of lighting and décor. Let it light up your room and leave the falling and destruction of them to Hollywood.
