Car Rental Rules

    • When renting a car, there are several rules to keep in mind. While rules and restrictions may vary both by rental company and by state, there are some basic rules that all car rental companies enforce and that all prospective renters must adhere to. Learning more about these rules before you attempt to rent a car will save you time in the long run.

    Age Restrictions

    • Most states have laws in place prohibiting car rentals to persons under 21 years old. In some states, the law prohibits rental to persons under 25 years old. Rental companies that rent to drivers between the ages of 21 to 24 often charge extra fees. Only two states, New York and Michigan, allow the renting of cars to persons aged 18 to 21. Check with the rental car company before reserving a car for specific details about age restrictions and fees.

    Valid ID And Payment

    • In order to rent a car, you must show proof of identification, as well as a valid driver's license. Whether you are paying for your car rental with cash, a credit card, or a debit card, most companies will require you to use a credit or debit card to secure the purchase. State requirements concerning proof of valid automobile insurance for rental cars vary, so plan on having your proof of insurance ready in the event that you are asked for it.

    Extra Fees

    • In addition to the base rental fee, rental companies will also charge applicable local taxes. Gasoline is not included in the rental charge, and is the responsibility of the renter. Extra equipment such as car and boosters seats and GPS units will also incur additional fees.
