How to Paint Over a Dark Wall
- 1). Clean the wall with a damp towel. Sand bumps on the wall and fill holes with putty. Use painter's tape to cover molding and window trim, and lay a drop cloth on the floor to protect it from drips.
- 2). Pour a small amount of primer into a plastic cup and use an angled paintbrush to cut in primer along the edges of the wall and windows. Pour some paint into a paint tray and use a paint roller to paint large surfaces and blend the edges. To get better coverage from the primer, you can ask the paint store to add a tint that matches the new wall color. Let primer dry completely.
- 3). As with the primer, paint along the edges of the molding and windows with a paintbrush. Pour paint into a clean paint tray and roll paint onto the larger surfaces with a paint roller. Let the paint dry completely before adding another coat of paint to ensure the dark wall color of the wall is no longer visible.
- 4). Clean the paintbrush with a wire brush and mineral spirits. Rinse the paint tray to remove all paint.
- 5). Remove the tape after the paint has dried for several hours to avoid peeling away new paint. Use a small paintbrush to touch up any dark paint that still shows at the edges of the wall.
