Natural Treatment for Arthritis Pain

    Origins

    • Arthritis is caused by injury, infection, aging, heredity or immune system abnormalities. Inflamed joints and damaged cartilage are characteristics of this disorder. Whenever a joint and its connecting cartilage are stretched past their capacity, inflammation is likely to occur. This is the body's normal response to injury. The swelling is caused by an increased blood flow to the affected area. This is the body's autoimmune response; however, certain factors can cause this response to further damage the affected area.

    Treatment Objectives

    • Arthritis pain can be ongoing, or it can be short-term. Pain and inflammation go hand in hand, so reducing the inflammation is the first step towards relieving any discomfort. Methods for reducing discomfort include applying heat or cold, medications and protecting the affected area. And while these methods may alleviate discomfort, the source of the problem remains. Traditional medicine focuses primarily on reducing inflammation, whereas natural treatments look to eliminate the source of the problem.

    Function

    • Natural treatments for arthritis pain rely on the body's natural healing processes to reduce inflammation, and restore bones and cartilage to health. Eating habits which neglect to include needed vitamins and nutrients result in deficiency build-ups within the body's chemistry. As a result, normal processes like digestion, healing, and the body's ability to ward off disease become hampered. Natural supplements are a way to restore the body's chemical balance, and functioning capacity. Once restored, inflammatory responses resume their intended healing purpose.

    Types

    • Natural treatments for arthritis pain include manganese, niacinamide, MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin, and green tea. The aging process is a known catalyst for the onset of arthritis when essential nutrients are missing from the diet. Manganese is an antioxidant agent that works to slow the effects of the aging process on the body. MSM is a supplement compound that helps in relieving inflammation and swelling. Glucosamine and chondroitin work to promote natural joint health and healing. Studies done on green tea show a certain polyphenol compound ingredient, called catechin, is especially effective in reducing inflammation, and preventing the breakdown of cartilage tissue.

    Prevention/Solution

    • As arthritis is a progressive condition, the sooner it's diagnosed and treated the better. Left untreated, joints and cartilage undergo continuous damage, and so require more intensive treatment measures. A regular exercise routine is shown to promote healthy bone and joint movement, as well as slow the effects from further damage. As far as dietary intake goes, one particular study done by the University of Manchester found a link between the occurrence of arthritis and low levels of vitamin C in the diet. People low in vitamin C were shown to have an increased risk of developing arthritis. Overall, natural supplements are only providing what our diets are lacking.
