How to Write a Letter of Reference to a Judge
- 1). Decide if you should write the letter. When asked to write this type of letter, take the decision seriously. Only write a letter of reference for someone you know well and are willing to vouch for. Be thoroughly honest and point out the person's good qualities.
- 2). Address the letter to the judge. Often times, a judge requests these letters prior to sentencing. He takes the information from the letters into consideration. Include your name, address and phone number on the top of the letter and address it by writing "Dear" followed by the judge's name.
- 3). Introduce yourself. Begin the letter by introducing yourself and explaining how you know the person. Make yourself look credible by including details about your qualifications, achievements and titles. Limit this information to one paragraph. A letter of reference should not be long: It should be limited to one page, be clear and include only necessary information.
- 4). Describe the person. List any positive things you know about the person, including his achievements and good character traits. Include a story or two that demonstrates the person's character and values.
- 5). Summarize the main points of your letter in one paragraph, emphasizing several positive details. Ask the judge to consider these thoughts when making a decision.
- 6). Close the letter. Include your phone number. Close with "Sincerely" -- sign and date it.
