Volaris Airline

About Volaris:

Volaris is the second largest airline in Mexico, after AeroMexico. It is a discount airline offering competitive fares on a wide range of routes. In the past few years the airline has been increasing its routes at a rapid rate, particularly between U.S. cities and Mexico.

Volaris airline began operations in 2006, with the Toluca airport as a base. For the first few years of operations the airline did not offer flights to the Mexico City airport, but after the dissolution of Mexicana airline in 2010, began offering flights to the country's main hub, taking over some of the routes Mexicana had previously serviced.

Purchasing tickets:

You may book your Volaris flight on the airline website, through the call center or at the airport. When searching for fares on the Volaris website, first you need to select your nationality (Mexican or non-Mexican) and type of payment. Then you may select your departure and destination cities and dates of travel in order to search for flights.

The Volaris website accepts payment by credit card, PayPal or SafetyPay online banking. You may also book your flight online or through the call center, and then make the payment at one of several retail stores in Mexico which accept Volaris payments, such as Oxxo, Sears, or Sanborns.

Ticket Options and Baggage Allowance:

Volaris offers three modalities:
  • Best Price: checked luggage of up to 33 pounds, and 22 pounds in carry-on
  • More Luggage: For 349 pesos extra, you may travel with checked luggage up to 55 pounds, and 33 pounds for carry-on and one piece of sports equipment of up to 44 pounds
  • More Flexibility: For 249 pesos more, you can choose the "more flexibility" option, which allows you to make unlimited changes to your ticket for no extra fee (just pay the difference in fare) up to four hours before the flight. You can also change the name on the ticket by contacting the airline's call center up to 72 hrs before your flight.

  • Boarding Passes

If you can, print out your boarding pass before you get to the airport. For national flights you may print it out from 24 hours and up to one hour before the flight, for international flights, you can print it up to 72 hours before. If you don't print it out ahead of time, look for one of the Volaris kiosks at the airport where you may print it out for free, otherwise you'll have to pay a 30 pesos fee per ticket for the Volaris personnel to print your boarding pass.
