Settled in 1763, the village of Bar Harbor stands on Mount Desert Island in the Down East region of Maine. A famous summer destination, the town draws many visitors each year with its historic downtown area and close proximity to Acadia National Park, which covers much of Mount Desert Island. Many of Bar Harbor's hotels and inns are housed in historic buildings along its main street and surrounding seaside areas, providing rooms and easy access to the region's many attractions. - Built overlooking Frenchman Bay, Bar Harbor Inn is a historic, 152-room hotel situated along a half-mile-long waterfront property. Built in 1874, the inn provided lodging for notable families like the Vanderbilts, and was among the few historic hotels to escape a devastating wildfire that swept the island in the 1940s. Featuring two eateries and a full-service spa, the hotel is close to attractions and activities like boating, Acadia Zoological Park and whale watching tours, as well as biking, hiking and fishing in Acadia National Park. Rooms are spread over three buildings, including the original historic inn, and provide wireless Internet, climate control, cable television with premium channels and a free continental breakfast.
