How to Add Color to Wall Texture

    • 1). Prepare the surface to be painted. Vacuum cobwebs and dust from corners of walls. Use a damp rag or sponge to clean any remaining dirt from walls. Place a drop cloth on flooring for protection from paint drips and spills.

    • 2). Apply 2-inch painters tape to surface areas near the texture that should not be painted such as the ceiling, molding, baseboards and window frames. Burnish the tape with a plastic putty knife or old library card, or simply use your finger to ensure the tape is well-bonded to the surface.

    • 3). Use a long-haired nap roller to apply the paint. Roll the paint using an even, overall pressure in a vertical motion. Remember, a second or even third coat may be required depending on depth of color as well as the amount of texture. Use an old paint brush or chip brush to pounce paint into crevices of texture that the roller is unable to reach.

    • 4). Paint the perimeter of the wall surface using a trim brush. Glide the brush along the perimeter of the surface where the paint roller was unable to reach. Use an old paint brush or chip brush to fill in any areas difficult to paint with the trim brush.

    • 5). Slowly remove the painter's tape. Use a small artisan's brush to paint any areas accidentally covered by the tape. Allow all paint to dry 24 hours.
