Depression and Unhappiness

According to Medterms, depression is "An illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts, that affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things".
Depression is generally associated with unhappiness.
When someone is unhappy about something, that person becomes expresses unhappiness in several ways.
Prolonged periods of unhappiness lead to depression.
Unhappiness is the state of feeling sad, miserable or wretched over something.
The difficulty one faces when they are unhappy generally comes out of an initial shock.
I was recently told about the case of twins.
Two boys who were twins lived in Fiji.
They were very close to each other and never went anywhere without each other.
They shared everything and were so close that one would start to cry if the other was not in the same room.
At 12 years of age, both were studying the same subjects and sat next to each other at school.
All of a sudden, one of them developed prolonged fever and coughing.
This resulted in the other not wanting to go to school alone but wanting to take care of his brother all day long.
The sick boy soon developed other complications.
When medical advice was sought, both the boys went to the Doctor together.
The sick boy was told after several tests that apart from his fever, he also had a brain tumour.
His parents were told that his chances of survival were slim.
All these events caused his brother immense unhappiness.
The sick boy was taken to the theatre to have an operation for his tumour.
He died on the operating table.
After his burial, his brother was more distressed than ever.
His parents thought that with time, he would get out of his unhappiness.
However, this did not happen.
The boy lost a lot of weight, stopped going to school, did not want to go and play with friends and wanted to be left in their room alone.
His parents were really worried about him.
Often well after dark, he would sit alone at home in complete darkness.
One day his parents went to his room to find that he was using a knife to try and slash his wrist.
He explained that he wanted to go where his brother had gone.
The only way he could get there was death and he was therefore trying to find ways of committing suicide.
The boy was referred to his General Practitioner.
Instead of prescribing any medication, the GP sat with the boy and attempted to understand why the boy wanted to go to where his brother had gone.
The boy said that there was nothing left for him in the World.
He could not live without his brother.
He therefore wanted to go to God where his brother had gone.
The GP thought about this situation for a while and asked the boy what were some things of interest to him.
The boy said that he wanted to be a chef.
The GP thought for a while and arranged for the boy to immediately go to an experienced cook.
Soon the boy started to cook and became very happy at the fact that he could cook so well.
All thoughts of his brother were gone when he was cooking and slowly he returned to a permanent state of happiness.
This case highlights how a state of unhappiness through a sad and untimely loss of someone close to a person can cause depression.
Sometimes, the solution can be unorthodox.
However, returning an unhappy person to a state of happiness is often the solution.
