How to Paint a Wall Under Kitchen Cabinets for a Dramatic Effect
- 1). Choose a color that relates to the other colors in the kitchen. Look at the color wheel for related colors. Colors that are side by side on the color wheel are called analogous colors. Colors that are directly across from one another on the color wheel are called complementary colors. Look at the colors elsewhere in the kitchen and on the other walls and pick a color that is related to these already existing colors.
- 2). Choose a color that has the potential to make a small kitchen seem lighter and more spacious. For example, by painting the wall under cabinets a dramatically lighter color than the rest of the kitchen, you push back the wall and make the depth of the counter seem larger than it is. This effect can be reinforced with a warm light installed on the underside of the cabinet.
- 3). Choose a color that has the potential to make a larger kitchen seem warmer and more intimate. A darker color than the other three walls will make the space under the cabinets seem nook-like. Try to paint this color elsewhere in the kitchen to tie this color in with the rest of the kitchen — for example, if there are any custom shelves on the walls, you can paint your chosen color on these shelves. This will help make the space of the kitchen feel less disjointed and more cozy.
