How to Set Up a Tax ID Number for a Trust Account

    • 1). Get the form. The application for a federal tax ID number can be downloaded directly from the IRS website (see Resources). This form can be faxed or mailed directly to the IRS, and the EIN will be mailed in a few weeks.

    • 2). Have all necessary information on hand. Before applying for a EIN for a trust, certain information must be obtained. This includes the legal name of the trust, the trustee, the contact address of the trust and the types of business activity in which it will engage. The trustee, if an individual, will have to provide his Social Security number or, if a corporation, its own tax ID.

    • 3). Compete the online application. Instead of filing a Form SS-4, an applicant can use the online application process. This is an interview-style approach, in which the applicant is led through a series of questions that elicit the information requested on an SS-4. No additional form is required.
