Types of Adjustable Beds
- Many individuals simply do not feel comfortable lying flat on a mattress. An injury or physical limitation may make getting in and/or out of a flat bed difficult for other people. Adjustable bed bases are the answer to these issues. An adjustable bed base is an electrically powered foundation that uses a motor to raise and lower the head or foot of the bed to the user's preference, allowing the person to sleep in a sitting position instead of lying flat. The position is also quite convenient for individuals who like to read or watch television while in bed. Often these adjustable beds come with a remote control to revise the position. Adjustable beds do not work with any mattress, though. They are designed to work with foam mattresses and specially made innerspring mattresses that bend in the middle.
- Sometimes an adjustable bed is necessary to match the size of a mattress and foundation. The bed frame is the support mechanism that holds the mattress and box spring off the floor, and it can be purchased in an adjustable version. The simple adjustable frame slides in and out to change the size. It usually locks into position and can be fastened to ensure stability. This is a convenient device for changing from a full-size bed to a queen- or king-size bed without purchasing a queen- or king-size bed frame.
- One of the major developments in mattress manufacturing is adjustable comfort level. It allows people to choose how firm or soft they wanted their bed. All they need to do is press a button to adjust the bed's firmness to their liking. These types of beds generally use an air chamber in the middle of the mattress to provide firmness. The controller adds or releases air to the chamber, making it more firm with more air and softer with less air.
- Sometimes the only adjustment needed for a bed is its height from the floor. Many bed frames are height adjustable. The feet on the bottom of such a frame can be turned to make the bed higher or lower. This feature can be useful for people who find it easier to get in and out of bed from a higher bed position. It also can be used to lower the bed to change its height after adding a thick mattress or foundation.
