DMV Permit Information
- Nonqualified drivers need to obtain a provisional driver's permit. After passing your tests, you will qualify for a full license. Other forms of permit available include a commercial vehicle license, motor carrier permit and a motorcycle/moped permit.
- In most states, the basic requirements for obtaining a driver's permit include proof of identity, birth date, residence and Social Security number; only original documents are acceptable. You will be required to take a vision test and have your photograph taken. For a provisional permit, if you are under 18, you need a signed parental consent form. For a full permit, you need to pass both a written and a road skills test.
- Many states apply restrictions to probationary drivers for a set time period. Even if you already have a full driver's permit, if you move to a different state, you will be expected to apply for a local permit within a specified time frame and surrender your previous license.
