Definition:

Oncogenes are abnormal (mutated) genes that can promote the development of cancer. These genes produce a protein that can stimulate cells to grow out of control and develop into a cancer.

Oncogenes can be either:

• hereditary - inherited from a parent, or
• acquired - caused by substances in the environment such as tobacco smoke

With lung cancer, most are acquired.
Scientists have identified more than 100 different oncogenes.

Understanding these genes opens the door for new cancer treatments in the future.
