Why Carpet Prices Can Be Deceiving

It is a well known fact that carpet prices are all over the map today.
That is why we have to do our homework and shop the prices thoroughly.
The biggest problem finding a good deal on a carpet is knowing how to compare apples to apples.
A brown Berber carpet at one store may look identical to the brown Berber carpet at another store yet have drastically different prices.
The reason why is because looks are deceiving.
Various carpets come in various grade levels.
They may appear the same on the surface but in actuality, they are quite different.
Therefore, always be sure to check the carpets density rating.
This is known as the APYD value.
The Average Pile Yarn Density for normal carpet is 4,000.
Commercial carpet will have an APYD density of 6,000, often more.
Anything less then 4000 will probably wear out faster than you expect.
Needless to say, if the first store shows you a carpet with an APYD of 3000 but the second store shows you one that has an APYD of 5000 the first carpet can be sold cheaper even though the two carpets may look identical.
Therefore, in the case of buying carpet, buyers beware.
Another factor determining carpet prices is the quality of the backing.
Some carpet's have a thin backing that will wear out faster.
The result is carpet fibers can work their way out of the backing as you vacuum.
A higher quality backing is sturdier and more tightly woven to prevent this.
The amount of stitching can also directly affect the price of carpet.
More stitching equals higher density the carpet.
The higher the density the longer the carpet is going to last.
So always, ask about stitches per running inch or the number of tufts for square inch.
A sharp salesperson will know this as 'tuft density.
' Finally, the padding can be another way for total carpet prices to be deceiving.
The establishment may be quoting you a price on identical carpets but may be including a cheaper padding.
Keep in mind that padding can affect the life of a carpet.
So once again the price can be deceiving if an apple to apple comparison is not been made.
As a side note, if you have done your research on the Internet and know what kind of carpet and padding you want, but cannot find it there is still a solution.
Look for carpets that have the 'or equal to specification' on them to help you identify similar grades.
