Sustainable Energy in New South Wales

The New South Wales Government of Australia continuously conducts efforts towards a sustainable energy sector by addressing greenhouse gas emissions and further developing renewable power sources with the help of suppliers like Integral Energy NSW, Country Energy and other major energy companies in the region.
Its current energy sector, just like the rest of the country, relies heavily on black coal and contributes more than half of the greenhouse gas emissions of the whole state.
Greenhouses gases, when maintained at a minimal level, are actually helpful in regulating the temperature of our planet.
But, due to global warming, greenhouse gases tend to build up in the atmosphere.
To help manage the greenhouse gas emissions, the government and the private sector constantly find ways to maximize available resources, produce more renewable energy and encourage more people to use it.
Renewable power comes from hydroelectricity, wind farms, solar photovoltaic technology, biofuels, biomass and other organic matter.
New South Wales, at present, get only 6% of their total electricity consumption from renewable energy sources.
This is broken down into the following: 88% hydroelectricity, 5% landfill methane, 5% biomass, and 1% each for wind and solar power.
Together with the rest of Australia, the state of New South Wales aims to get 20% of their total power consumption from renewable energy sources by the year 2010.
The New South Wales Government initiated and now manages the national accreditation program called GreenPower, which is committed to investing in renewable energy in the country and to making its electricity supply more sustainable.
Customers are encouraged to opt for a GreenPower product accredited by the government.
If a customer chooses such a product, his supplier will buy the requested amount of electricity from renewable energy sources.
To put it simply, the more GreenPower product you buy, the more you help in moving towards a sustainable energy sector.
The government makes clear, though, that people should buy only from accredited suppliers like Integral Energy NSW, Country Energy and Australian Power & Gas, among others.
These companies are audited on annual basis to make sure that your GreenPower purchases are properly converted to renewable energy investments.
These are only a couple of the major programs conducted by the New South Wales Government to reach their goal of moving towards a sustainable energy sector.
Current policies and activities are constantly reviewed to see if there are any additional efforts that need to be made.
More endeavors aiming at developing renewable energy sources, decreasing the electricity consumption from fossil fuels and eventually minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
