Oregon has the longest ski season in North America. It has the only year-round ski area and a hauntingly famous, historic lodge 10,000 feet up its highest peek. Its 12 ski areas and 13 terrain parks have a combined 16,000 acres, 400 runs, 71 lifts and snow cat access above the lift lines. Ski area are open from early November to April or May depending on snowfall and Mt. Hoods Palmer Snowfield operates year round. Lodges ranging from modern to national historic landmarks are as unique as the ski areas themselves.

Timberline, Oregon's most infamously recognized lodge, was the face of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic. That winding drive Jack Nicholson took to reach the fictional Overlook is road to Timberline Lodge and Ski Area. It also leads to more than 400 acres of skiing, with seven chairlifts operating in the winter and snow cat access to 8,500 feet. The 71-room lodge was hand built from 1936 to 1937 using locally salvaged timber and scavenged rock. It sits 6,000 feet up Mt. Hood. Mid-winter, with snow drifts piling past the first floor, the Timberline looks eerily as it did to Nicholson's snow-bound caretaker. Palmer Snowfield, just above the Lodge, is open for year-round skiing/snow boarding and is home to several summertime winter sports camps.
