ANSI Chain Standards

    ANSI Standards

    • The ANSI chain standard was first released in1930. There are now eighteen chain types covered by the ANSI B29 standard. ANSI chain standards are broken down based on the chain design, not purpose.

    ANSI versus ASME Standards

    • According to the "Standard Handbook of Chains" by the American Chain Association, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) now defines American standards for chains and the ANSI organization approves them. This means that American chain standards can either begin with ASME or ANSI; for example, ASME B29.1 and ANSI B29.1 refer to the same standard for precision roller chain.

    International Chain Standards

    • According to "Newnes Mechanical Engineer's Pocket Book" by Roger Timings, American standard chains are covered by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 606, ANSI standard B29.1 and the German standards DIN 8188. ANSI standards for simplex, duplex and triplex chains are similar to those for European standard chains.
