Dot Trucking Regulations in Georgia
- There are three general categories of trucks determined by a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR: vehicles under 10,001 pounds, vehicles more than 26,001 pounds, and vehicles in between the two.
- In addition to a U.S DOT number, which is required for vehicles with a GVWR over 10,001 pounds, commercial vehicles in the state of Georgia also require a fire extinguisher, stopped vehicle warning devices, a pre/post-trip inspection log and a log of hours driven.
- Commercial vehicles in the state of Georgia require standard brakes, parking brakes, emergency brakes, brakes to stop the vehicle if its trailer breaks away, and brakes for its trailer.
- Alcohol is not allowed within any vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,001 pounds, unless they are cargo or provided for passengers.
- Drivers operating a commercial vehicle with a GVWR over 26,001 pounds and a trailer over 10,000 pounds require a Class A Commercial Drivers License.
