How to Maintain Your RV Battery Cables

  • 1). Select battery cables according to your battery's size and routing length.

  • 2). Exercise caution when choosing ready-made cables because insulation can conceal the size of the gauge wire.

  • 3). Avoid cables with bolt-on terminals because they cannot be properly sealed to prevent corrosion.

  • 4). Check the cables for breaks, corrosion or stripped insulation.

  • 5). Check that the terminals are tightly fitted to the ends of the cable.

  • 6). Remove cables from the battery, negative first, and clean with a solution of baking soda and water.

  • 7). Clean the terminal posts with the same solution.

  • 8). Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the terminal posts. Reconnect the cables to the battery.
