How to Maintain Your RV Battery Cables
- 1). Select battery cables according to your battery's size and routing length.
- 2). Exercise caution when choosing ready-made cables because insulation can conceal the size of the gauge wire.
- 3). Avoid cables with bolt-on terminals because they cannot be properly sealed to prevent corrosion.
- 4). Check the cables for breaks, corrosion or stripped insulation.
- 5). Check that the terminals are tightly fitted to the ends of the cable.
- 6). Remove cables from the battery, negative first, and clean with a solution of baking soda and water.
- 7). Clean the terminal posts with the same solution.
- 8). Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the terminal posts. Reconnect the cables to the battery.
