How to Adjust the W-4 Tax Withholding When Married

  • 1). Complete the personal information on lines 1 and 2 of your new Form W-4. This includes your name, address and social security number.

  • 2). Check the box for "Married" in item 3 to inform your employer to use the married tax tables when figuring withholding, which results in less money being deducted. If you prefer to have more withheld so that you get a larger refund when you file your taxes, check the "Married, but withhold at the higher Single rate" box.

  • 3). Complete the Personal Allowances Worksheet if you only have one job and your spouse does not work. If your spouse works or you work multiple jobs, complete the Two-Earners/Multiple Jobs Worksheet. Whichever of these worksheets you complete tells you how many allowances you are entitled to claim.

  • 4). Claim all of the allowances you are entitled to by writing the amount on line 5 of Form W-4. If you prefer to have more money withheld, take an allowance or two fewer than you are entitled to.

  • 5). Submit your new Form W-4 to your employer. Your employer must start basing your withholding from the new form within 30 days of receiving your revisions.
