Encinitas Oktoberfest: Beer, Food and Fun
Despite the month of October being in the name, Oktoberfest is mostly celebrated in September, including overseas in the Oktoberfest mecca of Munich, Germany. Perhaps this is to get everyone ready for the fall fun that can be had in October? Encinitas is continuing this tradition by hosting its annual Oktoberfest this weekend on Sunday, September 21, 2014.
The Encinitas Oktoberfest is hosted by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and this year the festival is celebrating its 19th year.
It is a street fair that will be held at the crossroads of Mountain Vista Drive and El Camino Real in the North County San Diego city of Encinitas. The Encinitas Oktoberfest starts in the morning and has entertainment throughout the day for attendees of all ages. There will be a parade at 12 p.m. plus various tents where attendees can go for fun, food and entertainment.
An assortment of traditional German bands will be performing at the Encinitas Oktoberfest, including the Bluebirds German-American Band in the festival’s Family Tent. You can also see traditional dance by the Gemütlichkeit Alpine Dancers, who showcase folk dance styles from the Germany, Switzerland and Austria region.
While the entertainment is great in and of itself, it wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without food and drink. Visit the Main Tent for some gourmet sausage links and other authentic German cuisine. Head to the Beer and Wine Tent to have a cup of frothy beer or tasty wine.
Oktoberfest is known for its beer and the Encinitas Oktoberfest doesn’t disappoint with a line-up that includes Spaten Oktoberfest, Shock Top, Goose Island and Bud Light in the Main Tent. The wine varietals that will be poured are Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Craft Corner beer garden will have additional beers from craft breweries that are bringing their brews to the festival that best represent Oktoberfest. This is the first year that the Craft Corner will be at the Encinitas Oktoberfest and the Craft Corner beer garden will only be for those age 21 or older.
In all, the Encinitas Oktoberfest will play host to over 200 vendors, many of which are local artisans. Meander down the craft fair area of the festival to do some shopping and find a great piece of art for your home or something stylish to don for the rest of the festival.
The Encinitas Oktoberfest will also have a Family Fun Zone where kids can be kids by partaking in games and activities suited for them.
There is free parking available near the festival at Flora Vista Elementary School. Get there early to get a spot or you may be parking a long walk away on one of the nearby neighborhood side streets. Flora Vista Elementary School is located at 1690 Wandering Road in Encinitas. The Encinitas Oktoberfest runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free.
