One of the Netherlands" top modern art collections is held in this 1930s architectural beauty.

Iconic 20th-century art amid iconic 20th-century architecture: not only is the Gemeentemuseum (Municipal Museum) one of the Netherlands' most prized modern art collections (next to names like the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam); it's also the last work of H.P. Berlage, the father of modern Dutch architecture, who died before its completion in 1935.

Inside the museum's yellow-brick walls, visitors will spot some of the most famous names in 19th- and 20th-century art - Picasso, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec - as well as a vast collection of Dutch modern artists: its Piet Mondrian collection is unrivaled anywhere in the world, from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City (which lays claim to his famous Broadway Boogie-Woogie) to the artist's home city of Arnhem.

Two other art institutions share this vast museum complex: the GEM Museum voor Actuele Kunst (GEM Museum of Contemporary Art), and the Fotomuseum Den Haag, each of which features several temporary exhibits each year. Note that these museums have different hours and admission fees from the Gemeentemuseum: both are open Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.; admission is € 8 each for adults, but combination tickets offer discounted admission to all three museums.
