Marriage Tips for Brides: How to Have a Fulfilling Marriage
Newlyweds have a great opportunity to get things right at the beginning and enjoy a strong relationship well into the future.
It's much easier to start a relationship off on the right foot than to repair a hurting relationship many years down the road.
As a relationship counselor, I often get asked what makes a relationship last.
Here are some important tips to keep in mind as you start your married life together.
Talk about it now or fight about it later.
Kids or no kids? A house in the country or the city? Spend or save? It is important for couples to have a clear blueprint for the future so that you are working toward the same general goals.
If you can't agree on the big things, its infinitely harder to negotiate the small things.
When you have a common purpose and direction, little things fall into place more easily and you can celebrate your accomplishments together.
Trust your gut.
If you have nagging doubts, fears, or worries, talk about them with someone you trust.
Don't sweep those feelings aside, they won't disappear on their own.
Instead, address them head on so you can start your marriage with an open heart and mind.
Everyone deserves a partner who is committed and emotionally available.
Never say never.
Any relationship can be vulnerable to an affair, separation, divorce, or betrayal when it's not taken care of.
Your marriage needs to be nurtured and protected in order to stay strong.
Keep your relationship with your partner a priority and continue to make time for each other, no matter how busy your lives get.
While this may sound like common sense, it's often one of the first things to go when schedules get hectic and life gets more complicated with work, children, and other responsibilities.
Consider your time together a necessity rather than a luxury.
There is no such thing as perfection, and that's a wonderful thing! You will never be the perfect wife, marry the perfect husband, or have a perfect marriage.
Perfection does not exist, so give yourself permission to stop worrying about every detail.
Instead of striving toward perfection, work on being adaptable and flexible.
Enjoy the journey you are on together and don't put extra pressure on yourself to live up to impossible standards or expectations.
Live in the moment, be yourself, and appreciate your partner and your one-of-a-kind relationship.
