The 1972 Ford Mustang is a classic car, and so simple to work on that almost any garage mechanic can enjoy doing so. However, if you want to modify one of these older cars, exterior options are surprisingly limited. Whether due to their classic styling or not, only a handful of ground effects body kits are available for the 1972 Mustang, and only one is a full conversion kit. - The only full conversion for the 1972 Mustang is the conversion kit to turn it into "Eleanor," the Shelby popularized in the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds." The kit is both expensive and difficult to install because it is fiberglass, which requires special tools and poses environmental risks. The kit will set you back at least $4,000 before installation and painting charges.
- The small rear spoiler on the classic Mustang is available in a few places, and though its price is steep, it will help stabilize the rear of the car as you travel at speed. It's relatively easy to install, although unless you are replacing one it may be good to have a professional shop complete the installation for you. The spoilers run between $350 and $400 depending on the style and quality of the manufacturing.
- Window Louvers were stock equipment on some of the late 1960s and early 1970s fastbacks and they help smooth the air over the rear of the car, creating downforce. They give your Mustang a sporty look and are easy to find for almost any fastback year and model. They will set you back between $250 and $300 before the cost of installation.
- By moving away from parts built specifically for the Mustang, you open up the possibility of finding a host of universal ground effects and body kits to help with downforce. As with many car parts, these kits vary widely in both quality and style. Universal front and rear bumpers, side skirts and other trim pieces start at about $200 before installation, although higher quality parts are significantly more expensive.
