How to Attach Plastic Sheeting
- 1). Carefully roll out plastic sheeting on a solid, clean and dry surface. Do not allow the plastic sheeting to fold or rub against sharp surfaces, which can pierce the sheeting.
- 2). Install butyl tape or construction adhesive on the edges of the surface where you will attach the plastic sheeting. Press butyl tape to flatten into position around the entire perimeter to ensure an air-tight seal. Or as an alternative, insert construction adhesive into caulk gun. Cut the tip on an angle with a sharp utility knife. Apply around the entire perimeter to ensure an air-tight seal when dry.
- 3). Cut the plastic sheeting to the approximate size. Start with the straightest edge of the area that the plastic sheeting will cover and press the edge of the plastic sheeting firmly against the butyl tape or construction adhesive. Trim excess after attaching the plastic sheeting to the adhesive.
- 4). Overlap sections of plastic sheeting by 6 inches. Secure the entire length of overlapping edge with builder's tape to seal the edge of the plastic sheeting.
- 5). Trim excess with a sharp utility knife. Trim around outlets or other openings and seal the perimeter of the opening with builder's tape.
