- 1). Remove old weed trimmer spool. Unscrew cap. Pull off cap and washer or line guide ring, depending on your trimmer's design. Slide weed trimmer spool off the trimmer. Discard spool if replacing with a new, pre-wound spool.
- 2). Clean caked-on dirt and plant residue from your weed trimmer's shield while the spool assembly is removed to ensure the spool and string release mechanism on your trimmer remain in good working condition.
- 3). Slide replacement spool back onto trimmer. Route string through guide ring, leaving four to six inches of line from spool's center. Position line in spool slot. Position guide ring on bottom of spool and screw on cap.
