Placemats come in a variety of textures and fibers.wooden placemat image by Steve Johnson from Fotolia.com

Place a placemat directly in front of each diner's chair. You can use a placemat of woven cloth, vinyl, or open-weave bamboo, for example.

    • 2). Place your folded napkin at the left margin of the placemat, with the fold toward the center, whether you fold your napkin into a rectangle, or diagonally into a triangle.

    • 3). Put the fork in the center of the napkin.

    • 4). Put the knife at the right side of the placemat.

    • 5). Put the teaspoon to the right of the knife. The teaspoon should rest on the placemat.

    • 6). Put the plate at the center of the placemat. The cutlery should now be clearly visible on either side of the plate.
