Police cars that are equipped with in-car cameras allow officers to record the events that transpire during traffic stops. The office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), part of the Department of Justice, funded a program in 2000 allowing officers to purchase and install in-car cameras. Cameras placed inside taxicabs can help protect the driver from violent or threatening passengers who may not be willing to commit an illegal act on camera. If a passenger does commit a violent or illegal act within a taxicab, the camera footage can be used in a court of law. - Consumers now have the ability to purchase cars with cameras built into them. For example, the Toyota Prius offers a rear-view camera with the monitor placed on the dashboard. When the Prius is driving in reverse, the driver may view the monitor to see if any obstacles are in the way.
