How to Compare Different Prepaid Phones

    Availability

    • Consider the network of the provider. Many traditional cell phone providers, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon have entered the arena of prepaid, so they offer a large coverage network. Regional providers such as Metro PCS or Liberty Wireless offer regional service that may fit your needs. The network your phone uses determines if you have coverage where you live, work and travel.

    Plans

    • If you use long distance often, shop for a plan that includes long distance calling. Confirm additional fees, such as roaming, directory assistance and international calling. Ask if you can keep the unused minutes on a pay-by-the-minute plan. Examine each providers' selection of phones before deciding on a provider and plan. Some do not support smartphones.

    Pricing

    • When weighing pricing options, consider how you use a cell phone. If you do not use it often, you may get by on one of the pay-by-the-minute options that cost as little as 10 cents per minute, in 2010. Otherwise, select a plan that gives you unlimited calls, like the one offered my Metro PCS that starts at $40 a month.
