How to Train for Scuba Tank Servicing
- 1). Make sure you meet the pre-requisites. These are that you must be at least 20 years of age and certified to dive to a depth of 30m or greater.
- 2). Complete the level 1 theory section. Instructors from the Association of Scuba Service Engineers and Technicians (ASSET) teach theory in a dive facility. Areas covered include cylinder testing practices and procedures, valve maintenance, thread gauging, general standards, codes of practice and HSE (Health and Safety Executive).
- 3). Apply practical application for level 1. You will need to do this at a facility which has equipment for the various testing methods, normally a dive business. You will take all required practical skills including visual inspection, measurement and hydrostatic testing. They include cylinder inspection, how to pass and fail cylinders, use of a threat microscope and valve stripping down and rebuild. Practical training is followed by an exam.
- 4). Upgrade to level 2 cylinder testing. The subjects covered in this section will be metallurgy, to understand cylinder construction and testing. Advanced inspection techniques include testing for fire damage, how to inspect for causes of corrosion, how to detect cracks in scuba tanks and determination of tank status with regards to legal requirements.
- 5). Receive your ASSET Cylinder Testing (Part 1) Practices & Procedures and Cylinder Testing (Part 2) Advanced certificates. Candidates must have met all the performance requirements and have passed the exam to be issued certification.
