How to Reprint an Article

    Online Sources

    • 1). Select an article that you would like to reprint. Carefully consider whether the article is ideal for your site or publication. Also, if possible, have a backup in case you are denied permission to reprint the article.

    • 2). Ascertain which rights you are requesting, such as the right to e-print online or print to a paper medium such as a magazine or newspaper. Also establish whether the article is intended for educational or commercial purposes and determine how long you would like permission to use the article.

    • 3). Conduct research to discover who holds the copyright to the article. Major sites often hold the copyright to work that is published on their site. However, sometimes the copyright is still owned by the author or the article has been reprinted from another source.

    • 4). Contact the copyright owner. It is best to contact the individual in writing, as you will need written proof of permission. It is important to have written permission to ensure your protection if there is ever a question of legality. Some websites offer a direct contact link to submit a form or an email. In other instances you may need to send a general query asking for the proper contact's information.

    • 5). Agree to terms with the copyright holder such as number of times that the article can be reprinted, the length of time that the article can used, and whether it is intended for commercial, educational or personal use.

    • 6). Negotiate and pay any required licensing fees to the copyright holder, if applicable. Thank the copyright holder for granting you reprinting rights.

    • 7). Include the original source information when reprinting an article. This ensures that proper credit is given to to the writer and that readers will contact the writer if they have questions about the article's content.
