The Smelliest of Pests - Stink Bugs
Although there are an almost endless supply of bugs and rodents that can wreak havoc on a house or business, there is one that rises above most others in terms of annoyance and disruption of daily life. That of course is the stink bug, the most common and prevalent type of which is the Brown Marmorated. They are large and tend to move in large swarms that can overwhelm a farm or home. Stink bugs were first seen in the United States during the last decade of the 20th century. They are first thought to have come over here hidden in shipments of various products being imported into the country. They then took hold in several states, having first been identified in Pennsylvania in 1996.
Their spread has been rapid and nearly unstoppable in the decade that followed, and they are now found in more than half of the states in the country, from Florida to Oregon. They get their reputation as annoying and damaging pests from several sources. The first of which is their deleterious effects on farms that they happen to infest. They are known to voraciously eat and destroy virtually any type of fruit or vegetable that they get their hands on, and will often maintain their presence indefinitely by laying their eggs on the undersides of leaves and branches. When they infest a home, they tend to reproduce quickly, making any infestation a large problem within weeks of the first bug showing up at the house.
Stink bugs' large size and noxious odor makes them a huge problem and very hard to ignore. They will make their presence known in almost every aspect of a homeowner's daily life. Not only do they descend on farms and cause economic damage or on homes causing annoyance and headaches for the homeowner, they are also not generally susceptible to the common and trusted pesticides that are available on the market.
Therefore the insects must be battled with a completely different approach than most other bugs. The only tried and true method of getting them out is the trap. A man whose house was infested with an intractable bug problem invented it several years ago. The trap is designed to attract the bugs with a multifaceted approach, using both light and a sweet smelling lure. Once inside the stink bugs cannot escape the glue like substance and will die, letting the person dealing with the infestation merely have to throw out the trap insert and repeat as necessary to get rid of the problem for good.
