Overseas Hens Parties - Yay or Nay?

€If it's your last weekend of freedom, why do you limit the fun to just one night?' This was one of the tag lines advertised by a travel company; and they're not alone. In fact, planning destination parties for hens night at exotic locations is now an industry in itself.

Hens nights are no longer limited to a night out at a local wine house; they€re trendier (and probably more expensive) than ever. While the cost for a simple night out that involves some drinks and a limousine package averages at $50-$75 per head, a weekend of fun can set the bride's girlfriends back by $200-$300. And that's after excluding the costs for costumes and accessories that are a part of almost every hen do. But not everyone's complaining especially those who can afford to and are willing to spend money. If you've received an invite for a weekend hens party to an overseas destination, here are a few points to help you decide;

An Overseas Hens Party? Yes Please!

A lot has changed in terms of how women perceive hen nights. They're not always seen as the bride's €last night of freedom'- at least not until you are willingly getting married to a control freak whose sole aim is to squeeze every last drop of happiness from your life. As women are increasingly trying to focus on their career and yet strike a balance between work and home, friends often take a backseat. They're now looking at hen nights as an opportunity to spend quality time with friends. A weekend trip to Queensland, Tasmania or an overseas party in Fiji or Bali is the perfect excuse for friends to enjoy some time together. Usually, such destination hen parties are limited to the bride's closest friends; hence there's never a problem about spending time with people whom you do not know. Besides, if you've planned well, costs shouldn't be a problem. There are many low cost travel companies that can arrange all inclusive packages and offer the best possible deals on flights, hotel stays, etc.

Flying Across the Country only for a Weekend Party? No Thanks!

Hen parties have become mini holidays with no control over the expenses. Assuming that you've been invited to three hens night outs this year, out of which two were overseas destinations, you've easily spent over $1000 only on hen parties. Add to this the cost of gifts for each wedding! And since this is organised fun, you don't really have a say on the activities- unless you want to be branded a spoilsport.

The idea of getting drunk and playing fun hens night games may seem great for a single night, but to extend these activities to an entire weekend may be too much to handle when some just want to relax after a night of festivities are over.

To Be or Not to Be:

Just because you don't like going abroad on an overseas hens night party or cannot afford one, it does not mean that they're a bad idea altogether. Go or don't go- whatever floats your boat!
