Elvis" Birthplace
Memphis claims Elvis Presley as our own but the truth is, he was actually born in Tupelo, Mississippi. Today, his family's modest home is a popular destination for Elvis' fans. Learn about the King's early beginnings and find out what you need to know before touring Elvis' birthplace yourself.
History:
The home was built in 1934 by Elvis' father uncle, and grandfather at the cost of about $180. Elvis' parents, Gladys and Vernon Presley moved into the tiny two-room house at the end of that year.
Just a couple of months later, Gladys gave birth to Elvis and his stillborn brother, Jesse. The three Presleys lived in the home until 1938. That year, Vernon was sentenced to prison for forgery and the family lost their home. Gladys and Elvis moved in with relatives until Vernon was released from prison a few months later. The family moved to Memphis in 1948.
The Tour:
Today, the home where Elvis was born is now open to the public. Fans from all over the world visit the tiny home to stand in the very room where Elvis was born. The house is staffed by a tour guide who will answer your questions and share interesting tidbits of trivia. Unless you strike up a lengthy conversation with the guide, though, you will likely spend less than ten minutes in the house--there are only two rooms, after all. However, a small memorabilia museum and Elvis' childhood church are also on the grounds and are available to tour.
Admission Fees:
It is free to walk around the outside grounds of the Elvis birthplace site and take pictures.
If you want to tour the buildings, the admission fee for adults is $12.00 per person and the admission fee for children ages 5-17 is $6.00 per person. Admission fees are subject to change so be sure to confirm this information before making your visit.
Hours:
The Elvis Birthplace home and exhibits are open Monday - Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The grounds, however, are always open to visitors. As with admission prices, hours may change without notice. Please call to confirm before making your visit.
