Sole Proprietorship & Retained Earnings

Definition

  • Retained earnings are profits from a business that are not reinvested into the business. Businesses usually want to retain some earnings each year so that they eventually have enough saved to invest in new equipment or other business expenses that they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. Businesses report retained earnings on their financial statements along with current revenue that the business takes in.
