Redwood Pergolas: Why to choose them

Need help to transform a boring backyard into a place you want to spend time in? If yes, a new wood pergola might be just what a home-designer can recommend you. The backyard for many people is a sour spot in the scope of decorating. You can transform it into an extended living room.

For interior home decoration, there are so many great places to consult on how to decorate or what to do with a space. But, for exterior decoration, not much information is available. In addition, the selection of the right material for the making of outdoor furniture is quite hard. Despite this fact, wooden pergolas have historically been the best choice among homeowners as well as home-designers. This article intends to discuss how adding redwood garden pergolas to your backyard can save your investment and improve its setting.

There are lots of wood varieties. Redwood, cedar, teak, or oak are few of them. California Redwood is regarded to be the best one of them because of its longer durability and seamless finish. Both these features are mostly sought out by people. Again, pergolas being outdoor furniture, they need to be internally stronger and should have moisture and decay resistance.

However, all timber merchants claim that only their wood is of top quality. They also claim that their products do never sag, twist, shrink or warp, even if they are left exposed to weather all the year round. But, the reality often contradicts their claims, with the exception of California Redwood. Here are some features and reasons that have made California Redwood most sought-after and different from other wood varieties.
  1. California Redwood is durable and has a natural resistance to insect and rotting over time.
  2. In its natural state, redwood has rich finishes, unseen in other woods like teak, cedar or oak.
  3. California Redwood is the most moisture and decay resistant wood species that grows naturally in N. America.
  4. All California Redwood furniture boards are cut extra-thick for added longevity. Thin and light wood furniture just can't survive decades out in the weather.
  5. All quality redwood boards are air and/or kiln-dried to a 12% moisture content for the best long-term finish and stability.

Popularly three redwood grades are available. The warranty period for redwood furniture against decay is decided as per their grade. For instance, redwood has a 15-year warranty, mature redwood has a 20-year warranty and the Old-Growth Redwood has a 30-year warranty.

Being outside year-round is rough for any wood finish. The surface of any outdoor furniture like arched pergolas absorbs UV rays, pollution, constant variations in moisture and temperature and it also oxidizes. This is why most wood just doesn't hold up and the surface color slowly changes towards a silver patina as the finish fades. But, with California Redwood, you don't have to worry about replacing your sets. Redwood is decay resistant and it uses the best sealant on the market to keep the gorgeous natural wood tones from fading for several years.
