Can You E-file After April 15?
- According to E-file, the deadline to e-file an on-time tax return is April 15th. If you e-file a tax extension by April 15th, you have until October 15th to file your tax return.
- If you don't e-file your taxes or request an extension before April 15th, your tax return will be considered late. Although e-file software or online programs will still work after this date, you may be charged interest and penalties.
- The Wisconsin E-file system is still available for people to use after April 15th, regardless of whether they are expecting a refund or they owe the IRS money. People who file late will automatically be charged a penalty.
- People who pay their taxes late are charged a penalty of 0.5% of the tax owed each month until the return is filed, up to a total penalty of 25% of the tax bill. This percentage increases with continued nonpayment.
- The best way to avoid penalties and interest charges is to file your tax return and pay any taxes owed no later than April 15th.
